Susan Anderson wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am a baptized Catholic who has received both my First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

I chose Saint Bernadette as my Confirmation name but now, at nearly 50 years old, Bernadette has been accepted as a known name associated with banks, the government, etc.

  • How and why do I need to provide evidence of this when I was given no documentation at the time of my Confirmation?

The customs are demanding this information from me.

  • How can I possibly provide this?

They will not issue my son a passport, as Bernadette was not on my birth certificate, but when he was 30 years old, it was put on his birth certificate.

  • Why should I, as a Catholic, be made to feel I have wronged my son in using my Confirmation name?
  • Can I get evidence of my Confirmation ceremony and, if so, from who.

Thank you,

Susan

Bob replied:

Susan,

The place that would have records of Baptism would be the church where you were baptized.

The government has its own system of legal requirements and that is an entirely different matter.

It is always a safe bet to use the official name that is on government records whenever doing something that has legal ramifications.

I'm sorry that you are going through this.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Susan replied:

Bob,

I need to know if I can get some form of proof that Bernadette was my Confirmation choice.

  • Is there a certificate of confirmation available?

I have proof of my Baptism and Holy Communion. I just have no proof of my Confirmation.

  • If there is such a proof, where do I go to get it?

Susan

Eric replied:

Susan,

Write the church where you were confirmed. They will have those records.

Eric
